Blood Pressure
Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease that is manifested with high blood pressure inside the blood vessels. More than 65 million Americans are prone to this disease. Usually most people do not experience any severe symptoms, so they can not pay attention to their condition. However, the constant hypertension may result in different health problems including heart attacks, stroke, kidney damage and eye diseases.
Unfortunately, hypertension can not be cured. However it can be successfully controlled through a combination of medicines that reduce high blood pressure as well as life style changes that include:
- Moderate physical activity
- Weigh loss programs
- Reduced salt consumption
- Right Nutrition
- Quiting smoking and less alcohol drinking
A large number of medications that are used to control high blood pressure exist. There are several main types of antihypertensive medicines. They work in different ways and affect many biological structures that are responsible for controlling blood pressure. These types include:
- Beta blockers and alpha blockers
- Alpha-beta blockers
- Inhibitors of the nervous system
- Diuretics
- ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors)
- Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
- Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
If not treated hypertension can develop into a chronic form that is quite dangerous for human organism. The risk to die because of heart diseases, strokes and kidney failure increases if you experience chronic hypertension.
